Rivercrawler

Type: Speculative, Education
Advisor: Michael Rotondi

Rivercrawler imagines an ambitious extension of the Southern California Institute of Architecture campus that reaches out over the train yards of Downtown Los Angeles. The project envisions a future where robust public transit connects the heart of the city to its wider fabric, opening the school to a broader public and transforming it into a more accessible cultural and intellectual hub.

The proposal introduces a laboratory for environmental science as a new institutional partner — generating funding opportunities while cultivating a more diverse and interdisciplinary faculty.

Suspended above the Los Angeles River, the scheme appears to crawl along the channel’s edge, a striking gesture that embodies the school’s forward momentum. This dynamic posture reflects a belief that architecture, when combined with scientific inquiry into materials and the environment, can serve as a powerful vehicle for change — one capable of shaping more sustainable futures and reimagining the relationship between education, urban infrastructure, and the public realm.
